Twists R Not Locs

Hubby and I took my little baby, a 3 pound Yorkie to the vet.  Everything checked out—yipi! The vet sat down with his legs spread apart, he had a chubby belly and a thick white beard and was very jolly.  I asked about 20 questions to get my money’s worth.  After answering my many question he said…

Now, I have a question for you
What was Santa going to ask me?  Maybe I should get my dog neutered, or maybe address my parenting skills?

How long have you had twist?

One is a Lonely Number

For lunch I returned to the noodle place.  I decided to eat-in solo and remembered a conversation I had with a coworker.  She confessed she would never eat alone.  Not even at the small cafeteria at work.  What are you afraid of I inquired?  She shook her head in fear, “What would people think”?

Years back I was obsessed with the first season of the show, Starting Over.  They placed several women in need of life coaching in a home, to work on specific life issues.  I loved hearing life coach Rana, a Philly based positive Black woman with beautiful natural hair. Rana worked hard on helping Nyanza Davis, an obsessed material girl.  I remember calling my mom telling her I wanted to be a life coach.  She just laughed after I explained what I would, “help people get their life together—discover their dream.”  (BTW, the Life Coach thing didn’t work out—maybe it’s still in my stars)

Guest Blogger: Stacy T

On December 30, 2004 I began the process of locing my hair. Before that day I had been considering the drastic change from head full of perm to a head full of locs.

Growing up I was always told by my grandmother that “your hair is your beauty” and for her that meant long straight permed hair down your back. Growing up my home was filled with women and each one of them in my opinion was addicted to the perm. Since the age of six, every six weeks or so my mother and I would make the hour long trip to New York from Connecticut to visit what was known to us as the queen of hair dressers. I can remember watching as she would mix this white cream and then apply it to my mother’s hair and an hour later she would walk out with nice straight bouncing hair and a huge smile on her face. I remember wanting the same feeling and wanting that lovely bounce. I thought that was the only way your hair should look. I begged and begged my mother at the age of ten to perm my hair, eventually she gave in and I was introduced to the world of not only bouncing straight hair but a burning scalp to go with it. So from the age of ten to the age of nineteen I was what I now know as addicted to the feeling and look of what the perm did to me and my self image.Read More

I got a White Girl Flow

They opened this new place called Noodles and Company near my job.  For lunch I decided to go to get some pad thai noodles, yum.  There was this Black lady behind me in line.  I admired her wrap.  It was perfectly draped down to her chest.  It was so thick, and healthy looking.  I wondered how beautiful her natural hair would be.

She then asked a male friend, “So what did you think of Sasha’s hair today?”

“I don’t know, it was alright just not my type of thing,” the guy explained.Read More
