UK Naturals to Watch

image
by Deborah Gabriel peoplewithvoices.com

Anyone who has ever visited the natural hair channel on YouTube will be acutely aware that it is dominated by African American women. Afro textured hair is firmly on the mainstream media map in the US with the likes of CNN, The Huffington Post and the New York Times amongst others all running stories on Black women’s hair. In August of this year The Huffington Post Black Voices ran a feature called YouTube’s Top 5 Natural Hair Care Vloggers. Needless to say they were all home-grown naturals from the US with not a single UK natural in site.Read More

Taming the Beast – How to be a Natural Hair Ambassador Without Coming Off Like a Jerk

imageBy Terez Howard

So, you’re natural now, and you want every other black girl to be natural like you?

It’s not an uncommon reaction when you discover the wonders of your curls and coils.  Your natural hair can do things that your permed hair could never have done.  The online community of naturals spurs you to take your message of natural hair care to the streets.

But if you aren’t careful, your helpful mission could turn into a beastly re-run, the kind that no one wants to revisit.  If every other word out of your mouth gets glares and constant backlash, you might want to consider refining your approach.

Here’s how you can retain your status as a natural hair ambassador without coming off like a jerk:

Olive Oil

Written by Laquita

imageOlive oil seals in moisture, conditions, and improves the strength and elasticity of your hair, it also helps with dry, itchy scalp and kills head lice. Olive oil can be applied to dampened ends to seal in moisture as an effective way to prevent split ends. Mix olive oil with your favorite conditioner, and use it as a deep conditioning treatment.

Olive oil is the only vegetable oil that can be consumed as it is - freshly pressed from the fruit. It has a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidative substances. Olive oil also protects against heart disease by controlling LDL cholesterol levels, while raising HDL cholesterol levels.

Store olive oil in a cool and dark place, tightly sealed, because when exposed to oxygen, light or high temperatures the oil can easily go rancid.

Recipes

Honey & Olive Oil Hair Mask Mix ½ cup honey and 3 tablespoons olive oil. Work a small amount at a time through hair until coated. Cover hair with a shower cap; leave on 30 minutes. Shampoo well and rinse. Remember your final rinse should be done with cool water to close the hair cuticle.Read More
