What Am I Going To Do With My Hair?

By Terez Howard

When I stopped submitting to the acceptable norm of straightening my hair back in 2006, I vigorously researched what I was going to do with my hair in its natural state.  I discovered a plethora of natural hair styles that could try on my short hair, which shrunk to the shortest length I’ve ever worn.

Then there were locs
Naïve as I was, I thought locs were unnatural.  I thought the manipulation used to maintain them was contrary to allowing hair to stand up freely in its natural state.  And, you couldn’t comb your hair?!  I had to comb my hair, so I thought.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

“Every line means something.”
                      —Basquiat about his work

This month, everyone wants to talk about Martin Luther King, and Sojourner Truth.  Every person in history is important, but I would like to learn about new people!  As the creator of a Black Natural Hair blog my desire to incorporate history is 365 days a year.  No time better than the present to talk about Legends with natural hair.  It is important for me to note to you that this is not just a February highlight, but an ongoing goal for kinnks.com.  Any hoot, I was surfing through netflix and I came across a documentary called ‘Jean-Michel Basquiat: Radiant Child’.  I was so skeptical when I first started watching, I never heard of this guy!  The more I watched, the more I grew in amazement about the child prodigy.  I also realized I had been exposed to his work in the past, just didn’t know the artist specifically.

Basquiat started his art career by tagging walls, and subway cars with the name SAMO.  Jean-Michel Basquiat’s productive career spanned just one short decade, yet he is considered one of the best-known artists of his generation and one of only a small number of Hispanic-African-American artists to have achieved international recognition.
The documentary touched on how the media poorly portrayed him.  He was so ahead of his time, so outside of the box, that he was “banished” by parts of the notable art community.  The criticism that he felt were attributed to race, family and drug abuse lead to his very early death.

Eric Roberson f Lalah Hathaway Loc Inspired Video

It’s cheezy…. I know but its true.
In my adolescence my vision for adulthood entailed what
I imagined as daily spoken word poetry nights, just like the ones in the movie Love Jones
I imagined debating politics, and inspiring social change
I imagined being grown and sexy hanging with other Black Yuppies

Eric Roberson is eye candy!  Lalah Hathaway is adorned with beautiful locs.  In watching you will be inspired by locs, ‘fros and twist outs!

I now know adulthood is more than just what adults do for fun…
This video reminds me of my youthful vision of adulthood…

Eric Roberson is eye candy!  Lalah Hathaway is loc inspired… other ladies wear beautiful ‘fros and twist outs.  I love the drama this video unfolds, and the spectators reaction!

Video: Tupac Dear Mama Afeni Shakur

I think a lot about nature verses nurture.  Who would we be with a strong support system vs a dysfunctional family.  Are we destined to be who we are, or does our environment mold who we are?  I guess it is safe to say our environment can shape, or suffocate our potential.  Some of our World’s greatest leaders’ strength was born from adversity.  The thought of Tupac, his greatness and early death truly saddens me.

Tupac’s “Dear Mama” is officially inducted into the Library of Congress…
