It’s 2012 Already? Natural Hair Review

imageAround the time of the ball dropping in Times Square I set aside time to review.  Review the past year, and develop a plan for the next year.

It seems like 2011 just flew by!  For much of it, I feel like I was auto pilot, the details seem blurry.  Our multi-tasking, social media, smart phones, tablets, gadgets, tv and whatever distractions from faith, friends and family.  In 2012, I want to slow down and be a little more present.  I started 2011 by sharing tips to achieve your Resolution.

2011’s Buzz was natural hair’s popularity and come back!!

The number of black women who say they do not use products to chemically relax or straighten their hair jumped to 36% in 2011, up from 26% in 2010, according to a report by Mintel, a consumer spending and market research firm. Sales of relaxer kits dropped by 17% between 2006 and 2011, according to Mintel. [1]

Those who follow natural hair can’t be surprised.
Even Dr. Drew touched on the topic of natural hair!

Miss Universe 2011

Did you see the Miss Universe competition last night?  Congratulations to Miss Leila Lopes Miss. Angola who won the crown of Miss Universe.  I kind of figured she would win when one of the comentators compared Miss. Leila Lopes to former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliams (Big Up to Trinidad and Tobago).

Although Keylin Suzette Gomez - Miss Honduras did not make it to the final 16… I was very happy to see her natural curls!
It really made her stand out from the other ladies…

Gil Scott Heron: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

If you are one of those people that like the sophistication, Afrocentricity and political insight of spoke word ...
you are morning the death of
Gil Scott Heron.

Songs like ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” are examples of mental stimulation towards social change.

Life is like a circle, you end up where you started
If you end up where you started, ain’t no other side
Yeah, but if life is like a curtain than I’m 90% certain
I’m looking through at something…
Yes, I’m always touching something on the other side…

Jean-Michel Basquiat

“Every line means something.”
                      —Basquiat about his work

This month, everyone wants to talk about Martin Luther King, and Sojourner Truth.  Every person in history is important, but I would like to learn about new people!  As the creator of a Black Natural Hair blog my desire to incorporate history is 365 days a year.  No time better than the present to talk about Legends with natural hair.  It is important for me to note to you that this is not just a February highlight, but an ongoing goal for kinnks.com.  Any hoot, I was surfing through netflix and I came across a documentary called ‘Jean-Michel Basquiat: Radiant Child’.  I was so skeptical when I first started watching, I never heard of this guy!  The more I watched, the more I grew in amazement about the child prodigy.  I also realized I had been exposed to his work in the past, just didn’t know the artist specifically.

Basquiat started his art career by tagging walls, and subway cars with the name SAMO.  Jean-Michel Basquiat’s productive career spanned just one short decade, yet he is considered one of the best-known artists of his generation and one of only a small number of Hispanic-African-American artists to have achieved international recognition.
The documentary touched on how the media poorly portrayed him.  He was so ahead of his time, so outside of the box, that he was “banished” by parts of the notable art community.  The criticism that he felt were attributed to race, family and drug abuse lead to his very early death.
