Jean-Michel Basquiat

“Every line means something.”
                      —Basquiat about his work

This month, everyone wants to talk about Martin Luther King, and Sojourner Truth.  Every person in history is important, but I would like to learn about new people!  As the creator of a Black Natural Hair blog my desire to incorporate history is 365 days a year.  No time better than the present to talk about Legends with natural hair.  It is important for me to note to you that this is not just a February highlight, but an ongoing goal for kinnks.com.  Any hoot, I was surfing through netflix and I came across a documentary called ‘Jean-Michel Basquiat: Radiant Child’.  I was so skeptical when I first started watching, I never heard of this guy!  The more I watched, the more I grew in amazement about the child prodigy.  I also realized I had been exposed to his work in the past, just didn’t know the artist specifically.

Basquiat started his art career by tagging walls, and subway cars with the name SAMO.  Jean-Michel Basquiat’s productive career spanned just one short decade, yet he is considered one of the best-known artists of his generation and one of only a small number of Hispanic-African-American artists to have achieved international recognition.
The documentary touched on how the media poorly portrayed him.  He was so ahead of his time, so outside of the box, that he was “banished” by parts of the notable art community.  The criticism that he felt were attributed to race, family and drug abuse lead to his very early death.

NOT THIS TIME!  Tiffany aka New York of Flavor of Love has had an amazing natural makeover…

Noisettes - Never Forget You

I have been listening to this new band (new to me, I think they have two/three albums) and the lead singer has a natural, and I thought you may be interested in the music and may be a cool person for your inspiration videos on Kinnks

The group is The Noisettes; the song that turned me on to them was Never Forget You… But I like their stuff generally and their website noisettes.co.uk has a lot of their other videos.

Terry McMillan on Oprah

Did yal see Terry on Oprah today?

On twitter NappyAsIWannaBe said “I’m watching Oprah & I just had a serious hair-gasm while looking at that fro @MsTerryMcMillan was sporting! FIERCE”

It’s true!  I had the same reaction!

The show’s theme was, once you find your authentic self, you will find happiness. Kind of perfect for a Natural Hair blog uh?  Jenny McCarthy, Terry’s ex husband, and even Terry shared the same thing.

Missed it?

Willow Smith Whip My Hair

I was going to wait until Music Video Wednesday but I just couldn’t wait another day!  You’ve probably seen this video ... Move over Brittany Spears, Lindsey Lohan or even the too grown Miley Cyrus.  We have a new spokes-woman and her name is WILLOW SMITH! And Yes, she looks just like her daddy!!

This week’s video is Whip My Hair!!  Miss Willow Smith explains that
” ‘Whip My Hair’  means don’t be afraid to be yourself,” Smith said, “and don’t let anybody tell you that that’s wrong. Because the best thing is you.” (1)

We can all learn from such powerful words from such a young person. The up and coming pre-teens are spunky little individuals of expression.  At 9 most little girls cry at the thought of a hair cut, not even imagining a partially shaved head!  The shaved head sends a strong message… its just hair… and I will do with it what I please! I am a big fan of the Smith family, however I have my reservations about child stars.  If anyone can handle it it, I am sure Mr. and Mrs. Smith are keeping their kids very well balanced.  Besides, we need positive little Black girls like Willow!
