As a child, braids were the norm. Little Black girls had cornrows. My mom didn’t like beads. Instead she laced my hair with colorful yarn (short lived style of the 80s).
Naturally.Elemental brought to my attention a story of a young girl. A young girl who believes she was attacked because of her braids. This is almost as ludicrous as the teacher who cut off a student’s braid. I am sure we don’t know the entire story, but the concept of being attached because of a hair style is an interesting one. The police charged the teacher $175 fine for disorderly conduct. Congress Elementary school will conduct a discipline hearing.

I finally saw Chris Rock’s Good Hair documentary.
One of the movie previews was Precious based on Sapphire’s book Push. When I read that book in high school, my perception of life changed. That movie/book highlights serious issues we have in our community such as child abuse, and self-hatred. I hated reading the book because it was so painful. By the end, I did believe there is hope. I am definitely going to support this movie by going to see it!

Have you heard of the “So In Style” Barbie?
“So In Style” is a new project Mattel launched last month. Christie, Barbie’s 1960s previously Black friend was a duplicate of Barbie painted brown. Grace, Kara and Trichelle look very different with fuller lips, wider nose and more pronounced cheek bones. These dolls mentor little sisters and are very career minded. The dolls reflect varying skin tones of light brown, chocolate and caramel. This is good right?
Well creator Stacey McBride-Irby says when playing with her 6-year old daughter, the highlight is playing with Barbie’s long her.
The “So In Style” Barbie is a great step in the right direction, but incomplete. The dolls have received mixed reviews because it ignored the HAIR factor.
Being Black encompasses culture, facial features, color and hair. One can be considered “Black” with just one.
