“How to Stay Natural”
How to Stay Natural
Self Love and Preservation
“How to Stay Natural”…. Okay, most of you are wondering, “Who is this trying to tell me how to stay natural? I got this!” Well you probably do. BUT! Not without issue. I have been natural for 19 – 20 years (wearing locs for 13 yrs). In this time I have seen natural hair come, go, re-vamp, re-energize, and re-store itself. I have seen the lawsuits around the country via the news; the self-esteem issues of women rise and fall, the politics of “good” vs. “bad” hair, the negative connotations and uber affirmations.
The “sistahood” seems like a club that you automatically become indoctrinated to when you start transitioning from relaxed to natural. The key is you have to follow through with your journey to be an “official” member. With that being said, let us not forget the conscious level of everyone is not the same. Many women transition as a rite of passage to self-awareness, others for the style, while others are due to health issues. Seeing women look like ourselves, presenting confidence and reassurance, hopefully will give you insight to what you want and strive to be as a woman – a natural woman. At the end of the day we realize that we are just as beautiful if not more beautiful naturally.

Traci’s Hair Story…
I started my natural hair journey in March 2006. The decision to no longer perm my hair came along with me making the transition into a vegetarian/holistic lifestyle. It was a rough hair journey. As my hair was going through the detox stage I battled with “cant do anything with my hair” syndrome.
My hair had an interesting look…I had inches and inches of new growth with straight permed ends. My natural hair transition was so challenging for me that I purchased a perm because of that “cant do anything with my hair” stage. I am soooo thankful that I held strong and didn’t perm my hair. Being Natural is who I am! I had to embrace my hair in order to love it. Although my hair has different textures - I still love being natural. I found my purpose in my naturalness.
As a result of changing my lifestyle, I stumbled across my purpose. I had no idea what God had in store for me. Being vegetarian/holistic/natural, I had to change the products that I used on my skin and my hair. I attended the Natural Hair Expo in 2009 in which I purchased raw shea butter for the first time.
I’m not sure where the idea came from but I decided to put the shea butter, olive oil, vitamin E and Lavender in the blender (my first recipe). I let a coworker try my concoction in which she loved it and wanted to purchase a jar. This was the birth of Satin Blends.
Satin Blends products are all natural, organic and Vegan. All Satin Blends product are handmade with Passion & Love. Our products are specially blended with raw unrefined shea butter, organic essential oils. organic carrier oils (such as Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, etc) and natural preservatives.

It wasn’t long ago when natural hair wearers had to either go on a scavenger hunt for products to maintain their natural tresses or become Kitchen Beauticians and make their own. Nowadays, you can go into practically any store and find products that are geared toward maintaining and styling natural hair.
As a result of the natural hair surge, many large corporate cosmetic companies have also, for lack of a better term, jumped on the natural hair bandwagon, touting products for ‘curly’ hair and/or ones that contain natural ingredients such as Olive Oil and Shea Butter.
Years from now, will these larger companies end up buying out the smaller internet or home-based ones making them obsolete? Will executives without a strand of natural hair on their heads end up selling natural products? The following bloggers/natural hair product makers shared their thoughts with Kinnks.
