How One White Man Views Our Natural Hair

By Terez Howard

Why do you spend all that time on your hair?
That’s what my husband used to ask me about 6 years ago.  I was natural.  But I didn’t wear my natural hair.  I straightened it as straight as I could.  I rolled it every night in curlers.  I rarely wore my hair down for fear the dreaded moisture monster would scare my hair into its natural state.

Now I spend about 8 hours retightening my locs every 5 weeks.  And he says, “That’s really fast, Terez.  You’re getting good at that.”

That might seem ridiculous.  However, my white husband appreciates that I am wearing my natural hair.  Ethan has been my No. 1 biggest supporter.  Although I had a lot of chemical-free bloggers, Internet-based DIY-ers and online naturals to turn to, if I didn’t have him in my corner, I don’t think I could have done this natural hair thing.

When we first got married, he did not understand what I had to do to make my hair look “presentable.”  I would not dare go out with freshly washed hair.  Ethan would always ask why.  I always retorted, “I can’t.”  He was the first person to tell me there was nothing wrong with wearing my hair after it was washed.  I think that was on our honeymoon.

Natural Hair Versus Relaxed Hair Discussed On The Dr. Drew Life Changers Show

On 11/1 I posted Natural hair doesn’t make you ‘Blacker I mentioned that natural hair is becoming sooo mainstream, everyone has an opinion.  A few weeks later, its on Dr. Drew.  Julee Wilson (Huffington Post) also gives mention to the national attention our hair is receiving.

While watching the show recaps….I couldn’t help but feel like we were airing our dirty laundry again.

What do you think of the Dr. Drew episode? [3 Videos Posted Below]

Occupy the Hood

In general people are feed up.  Unemployment rates point towards the sky, while corporations have record profits.  The greedy elite lobby politicians as their puppets.
“Occupy Wall street” is the movement around the nation demanding change.
While the group is not very clear on their terms, their voices are being heard.
It seems like the wider spread the protest, the more diverse the crowd.
Thanks to groups like “Occupy the Hood” who want to ensure under represented communities are actually represented.

Black Women and Hair According to Summer’s Eve

I guess on the outside, looking in… Black women have a different obsession with hair.  (This is a fact, especially coming from a hair obsessed blog).

Now, when trying to market to Black women, I don’t think it is wise to mention our hair obsession, and lack of Vagina obsession.  Just saying.

I mention this because of the recent Summer’s Eve’s Advertisements. (Click Read More for Video)

A Black hand talks about all the time spend in the club and, “hair on your head”, and the neglect to the hair down there while drawing a cactus.

The Latino hand starts off by saying “Aye, Aye, Aye” and then in a heavily accented voice mentions the “trashing the tacky leopard thong.”  She evens mentions the ease of child birth while several storks carrying babies are displayed.

TSA Security Required Natural Hair Search

I visited Seriously Natural, An older Natural’s perception blog in which I first heard the TSA asked to search a woman’s natural hair.

I always try and support the TSA agents because they are doing their job, and trying to keep us safe.  I do not fly often..but the few times this year I have had body scans, and pulled to the side to have my liquids tested. Forgetting the TSA Horror Stories I patiently stand a side and follow their directions.  I have heard heard stories of people protesting by walking through the security points in their underwear or naked.  (I thought to myself these people are being bratty.  Imagine if they were a minority that face regular suspicion).  How quickly we forget how we felt the fatal day of 9/11.

With all the said, I would be very cheeped out if a stranger had to put his fingers in my hair. Yuck-o.  Click read more for the video about the TSA’s natural hair search.

Do you think the TSA was racially motivated?
