Inspiration
I started the Lady Kinnks blog around January 4, 2009. We are officially Eight months old! Thanks for your support! Sometime between the start and now I saw that Carmen’s Blog had listed Lady Kinnk’s on her blog roll! I was sooo excited that someone found my blog and thought it was worthy of linking. Especially a virtuoso like Carmen of Tomoka’s Twists! Also my twitter buddy, Ms. Carmen is a Sisterlocks consultant, and talented artisan. While many of us go through bored fazes with our Natural Hair, Carmen gives pizazz through hair decor. Carmen shares her natural hair story below…
Can you be Christian and Muslim? Very random, but I will find a way to relate it to hair ![]()
I grew up Episcopal. I did not get very involved in my church because I felt like an outsider. While it is an all Black church, it is very conservative with a lot of elite Black folk. While this is a great thing, my perception was I couldn’t be apart of all the exclusive groups because I was not rich enough. In college I grew very close to a Baptist Bell that converted into Islam. She taught me so much about religion and life. Reading the Qur’an and learning about Islam, I understood why many people convert to Islam. What disappointed me is at the age of 22, she postponed her dreams, dropped out of college, got married and had kids. She had big goals that I think she put aside for reasons I cannot understand.

Any way, Rev. Ann Holmes Redding caught my eye. This loced queen is an Episcopal priest of 20-years. The confusing part is that she puts on a Hijab headscarf, prays five times a day and worships one God Allah. She states that Jesus helped her find Allah.
Ms. Chaundra, sole proprietor of Naturally Me graciously sent me her amazing natural products!! It was like Christmas yal! On my way home after picking up the goods from my PO Box—the car was filled with a fabulous aroma. I couldn’t believe the smell filtered through the box. The smell was a combination of a 100% Soy Pumkin Spice candle and Joyful feet!
For lunch I returned to the noodle place. I decided to eat-in solo and remembered a conversation I had with a coworker. She confessed she would never eat alone. Not even at the small cafeteria at work. What are you afraid of I inquired? She shook her head in fear, “What would people think”?
Years back I was obsessed with the first season of the show, Starting Over. They placed several women in need of life coaching in a home, to work on specific life issues. I loved hearing life coach Rana, a Philly based positive Black woman with beautiful natural hair. Rana worked hard on helping Nyanza Davis, an obsessed material girl. I remember calling my mom telling her I wanted to be a life coach. She just laughed after I explained what I would, “help people get their life together—discover their dream.” (BTW, the Life Coach thing didn’t work out—maybe it’s still in my stars)
People I meet…
