It’s 2012 Already? Natural Hair Review

imageAround the time of the ball dropping in Times Square I set aside time to review.  Review the past year, and develop a plan for the next year.

It seems like 2011 just flew by!  For much of it, I feel like I was auto pilot, the details seem blurry.  Our multi-tasking, social media, smart phones, tablets, gadgets, tv and whatever distractions from faith, friends and family.  In 2012, I want to slow down and be a little more present.  I started 2011 by sharing tips to achieve your Resolution.

2011’s Buzz was natural hair’s popularity and come back!!

The number of black women who say they do not use products to chemically relax or straighten their hair jumped to 36% in 2011, up from 26% in 2010, according to a report by Mintel, a consumer spending and market research firm. Sales of relaxer kits dropped by 17% between 2006 and 2011, according to Mintel. [1]

Those who follow natural hair can’t be surprised.
Even Dr. Drew touched on the topic of natural hair!

Natural Hair Web-Series

I do not subscribe to cable television.  Some may think this odd, but I use it as somewhat of a safety net.  It started out as a way to save money, but the truth is I can’t handle it!  Once I turn on the TV, I end up watching it for at least four hours.  Any show or series becomes an obsession.  I keep telling my self, ‘You must see what happens next!’  It doesn’t really matter that I don’t have cable.  I still find things to watch in other outlets like netflix.

My newest entertainment fix is Black Women’s Entertainment Network.  I had no clue how popular Black web-series are!

I found a few series featuring characters with natural hair that caught my eye…

Natural Hair Makes a Comeback in the African-American Community

March is always touchy feely for me.  My wedding anniversary, and the anniversary of my mother’s death are two days apart.  They initially happened a year apart, but the joy and pain will last a life time.

This past weekend I spend time in Washington DC aka Chocolate City to celebrate 5 Years of Marriage!  (I had a fabulous time!) Every time I visit, I am in awww over all the natural hair.

If I am in DC, Richmond or event Connecticut… the trend of natural hair is growing, and here to stay!

Even more evident in the following video…

Barbados Natural Hair Scene

I just finished watching the Rihanna / Diana Sawyer interview.  I am late in seeing the interview, but I am happy I took the time to find it online.  I respect Rhianna for being truthful about going back to Chris Brown then realizing her mistake and ending the relationship.  From the interview it sounds like Rhianna let her pride get in the way of putting herself first.  As women, it is soo difficult for us to put ourselves first.  I find myself taken care of people around me, better than I take care of myself.

Speaking of Rhianna, I had an impromptu trip to sunny Barbados.  Unfortunately it rained, and Rhianna was not there to shield me from the rain with her umbrella, umbrella, eh.  Kidding aside, I had a great time on my second trip to the small nation.

Country Side

We spent a lot of our time in the country on the family’s farm.  When we weren’t on the farm, we were visiting friends and family.  I did not meet one female relative or family friend with natural hair.

Good Hair Review

I finally saw Chris Rock’s Good Hair documentary.

One of the movie previews was Precious based on Sapphire’s book Push.  When I read that book in high school, my perception of life changed.  That movie/book highlights serious issues we have in our community such as child abuse, and self-hatred.  I hated reading the book because it was so painful.  By the end, I did believe there is hope.  I am definitely going to support this movie by going to see it!
