I typically do not watch the Academy Awards, but something compelled me to stay up and watch this past Sunday.
Sapphire
The movie Precious is based on the book Push. “Push was unpublished before being discovered by the renowned feminist literary agent Charlotte Sheedy, whose interest created demand and eventually led to a bidding war. Sapphire submitted the first 100 pages of Push to a publisher auction in 1995 and the highest bidder offered her $500,000 to finish the novel.”(1) WOW!
Although we celebrate “Black History” every day on Kinnks.com, I want to be sure to highlight natural hair legends.
Marsha A. Hunt (born April 15, 1946)

is an American model, singer, novelist and actress.
In 1968 Marsha Hunt appeared in London’s HAiR. HAiR is the ground breaking, Broadway first rock musical. The Vietnam war was escalating, so HAiR’s plot about a New York street kid and his friends deciding if he should burn his draft card was a hot issue. Songs about sex, drugs, race and personal liberation were controversial. A bigger stir was caused by a moment before the interval, the entire cast appeared naked under a dim blue light.
I just finished watching the Rihanna / Diana Sawyer interview. I am late in seeing the interview, but I am happy I took the time to find it online. I respect Rhianna for being truthful about going back to Chris Brown then realizing her mistake and ending the relationship. From the interview it sounds like Rhianna let her pride get in the way of putting herself first. As women, it is soo difficult for us to put ourselves first. I find myself taken care of people around me, better than I take care of myself.
Speaking of Rhianna, I had an impromptu trip to sunny Barbados. Unfortunately it rained, and Rhianna was not there to shield me from the rain with her umbrella, umbrella, eh. Kidding aside, I had a great time on my second trip to the small nation.
Country Side
We spent a lot of our time in the country on the family’s farm. When we weren’t on the farm, we were visiting friends and family. I did not meet one female relative or family friend with natural hair.

I wore twist-outs Thursday into the weekend. By the time Saturday came around, my hair started to poof more and more. Saturday night we went for Sushi. While looking at the menu, the lady from the table next to me smiled and walked over. I just wanted to tell you, she explains. My boyfriend is a photographer. He was just telling me that if he had his camera and his business card he would’ve asked to take a picture of your gorgeous hair.

I finally saw Chris Rock’s Good Hair documentary.
One of the movie previews was Precious based on Sapphire’s book Push. When I read that book in high school, my perception of life changed. That movie/book highlights serious issues we have in our community such as child abuse, and self-hatred. I hated reading the book because it was so painful. By the end, I did believe there is hope. I am definitely going to support this movie by going to see it!
