If you are familiar with the term octoroon, you understand that if you are 1/8th black, you are considered a Black person despite all the generations of any other race that may be in your ancestry. This law was an economic decision. Keep Blacks enslaved = free labor, more wealth for plantation owners.
In other nations like China, being Black can means something different. A while back on Naturally Sophia‘s blog I saw the story of Lou Jing. Lou grew up in China with her Chinese mom, never knowing her African-American father.

Whenever anyone looks at Lou Jing, they see a Black girl. Besides her skin color, Lou Jing is Chinese. She knows no Black people. Due to our interesting world, Lou needs to labeled, and put things into a neat box of race that does not exist for her.

Afrolicious and Sisterlocked brought the Shadeism Video to my attention. While watching I was like…ghee look at these Canadians! Many times I feel it is difficult for American People Of Color to unite across ethnic lines. This is a shinning example of women from different nations getting together not to just talk about our issues, but put steps into action to eradicate them.

When I think ghetto wig, I think messy, unmanageable, plastic like. Something with little class or taste. I quickly forget other people’s perceptions of ghetto. For some, people see a Black person, and think ghetto. What about Sasha and Malia?
During the day, I am a hotel sales woman. A local country club called our hotel wanting to collaborate. She explained how impressed she was with our Bellman. She explained he was an tall African-American handsome man. She continued to say she was so impressed with him. He was polite, seemed to love his job and CLEAN.

Movie: Avatar
I have not seen the movie, but its description sounds familiar. Humans go to the planet of Pandora to extract a precious mineral. To extract this precious mineral, the indigenous people Na’vi are asked to leave peacefully. Because the Na’vi feel the land is sacred, they refuse to leave. Greed, power and money start serious conflicts between the two. There is one line in the trailer when one of their humans say something about the Na’vi only having bows and arrows while the humans have machine guns. The graphics seem amazing. If you are into sci-fi this seems like a movie-watchers dream. While watching the trailer I ignored all the amazing graphics. Instead I was focusing on the various hairstyles of the Na’vi including braids and locs.
