Angela Walker, creator of N.E.W. Hairnet.com and contributor to The Coil Review, chimed in on the issue in a piece titled “Celebrating an Industry”.

“We have taken something that is our birth rite - naturally kinky hair - and turned it into an industry of sheer celebration. From the blogs to the salons to professional stylists, this is an industry that celebrates the beauty of blackness; the beauty of blackness with the veils removed. This celebration is pure and true, but will it remain that way?

20 years from now will this now predominately black-owned industry still be run by blacks? Will our natural hair salons have a black face in the window, but a non-black corporate ownership on paper? Will the owners of our major natural hair care products sell their line to Clairol or Johnson & Johnson to make a quick buck? she asked her readers.

Creator of Entwine Couture Beauty products, Dr. Adrienne Carthon stated that if larger corporate companies do buy-out smaller ones, the quality of the product will go down because not much of an investment will go towards quality. “The creation of the products will no longer be a labor of love, it will be all about the money,” she added.

Dr. Carthon feels that larger chains such as Target stocking their shelves with natural products is also great as long as the ingredients/quality of the products are not compromised.

Kindra Perry of Natural Urbanista also weighed in. “As an MBA graduate, I see the value in capitalizing on its growing popularity. It’s a guaranteed cash cow because you will always find naturals looking for the next, best product with ABC and that does XYZ.

But, will they take the place of smaller businesses? I don’t think so, because they have something these larger cosmetics companies will never have—established brand loyalty and personalized customer service. Many of the smaller companies reach out to their customers. When you have concerns or questions, they respond to you directly.

While larger companies may be able to offer their products at a lower price-point, due to their advantage of being able to mass produce their goods, there are just some things that ‘some’ natural-haired consumers value a bit more and are unwilling to trade.”

At the end of her article, concerning the stability of home-based/internet natural hair business, Angela Walker challenged her readers, “I am asking you to continue supporting an industry that supports our people, one whose foundation is based on the celebration of being Black.” I agree with her sentiments. What do you think?

I lived in braids between the ages of 14-17. It was the only compromise my mother would accept although she still felt the need to relax my hair periodically. During my junior year of high school I traveled to Germany as an exchange student for the entire year. This meant no salon, no extensions, no perm, nothing. Well not exactly nothing. More like my hands in my own hair.

I realized how much of my self-image was wrapped up in long hair and extensions. I spend the better part of the year learning to love my kinky roots in it’s original state. I was really trying to cope with my ‘fro but it just didn’t look right to me. My best friend, Jocelyn, came to visit and brought a perm kit in her luggage. As we applied the product to my virgin hair I felt like a backslider dipping back into the “creamy crack”. I was happy with it for a while but of course my longing for braids returned. A distant relative of my host family was a young black girl who could do the long braids I adored. I was beyond ecstatic! It was like a new beginning for me. It was also the last time I applied relaxer to my hair.

I returned home and by the following year I had grown bold enough to wear my natural hair again. After the last relaxer I realized my love for myself as an African American woman and for the skin and hair I’m in. I’m proud to say that it has been 13 years without a relaxer and I have never been more grateful. My love of natural hair has led to a ten year career as a stylist and educator. I work with young girls teaching fashion design. My natural hair sends a strong message to all my girls about being true to yourself and love everything-head to toe.

One may consider the following hurtful …

“When You Become Natural – You Attract a Different Quality of Guys”

This translates to:

When you gain a certain level of self discovery and love for yourself, you attract a different level of guys.

There are two types of naturals. Some, who rock natural hair for JUST style. The second, our target market, those who used their natural hair journey as a positive catalysis for self discovery and love.

I went through every hair chemical known to man from the age of 9 to 16.I had a relaxer, which was fine until my hair broke off because the culprit who talked me into it at 9 ceased to take care of it. I continued to get those until my Aunt the Beautician decide that a Jheri Curl (*cringe*) would make my hair grow. Little did she know I was never gonna take care of it, and my hair ended up looking more like a dry natural versus a greasy unnatural curl.

Ultimately, I got it all back into a relaxer, then when I felt I was knowledgeable enough to take care of it myself without intervention in high school, I trimmed all the relaxer out and was left with a shoulder length bob that I wore ironed out until college. I didn’t think I could be freer with my hair decision, until I got on campus…

Attending an HBCU may have been the best thing to happen to me and my hair because I was finally able to embrace my total package and love my hair for what it was and all its potential. I went from flat and straight, to braids, then I started wearing twists, Zulu knots, a brush fade, wash and go styles and all kinds of gravity defying coifs. It also inspired me to share my gift for natural hair design and create a business!

Style and Product Suggestions
Currently, my fave style is a twist out/ pin-up, adorned with a flower or studded clip and polished with 365 brand Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from Whole Foods Market. Organix Pomegranate and Green Tea Shampoo is amazing, and so is their Shea Butter Conditioner. I also use Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter for everyday styling. I am raising my Lilies natural all the way, in the hopes that they have no hair nightmares like I did, and grow up loving the hair they were born with.

According to the March 31, 2010 press release, “Target has expanded its hair care assortment to include African American salon products never before offered at mass… This expansion further delivers on the retailer’s Expect More. Pay Less™ brand promise while providing guests with convenient access to the brands they know and trust.” No longer do we, natural hair wearers, have to order online at different sites for these products - we can get them all at one place - our neighborhood Target.

For those like me this news is bitter sweet because I Love Target
and I can barely make it out of the store, even though my plan may have been to just pick up a Birthday or Graduation card and some gum, without spending more than $50 (and I’m being a tad bit modest with the $50 just in case my mother or husband are reading - lol). Anyway, being the product junkie that I am, I am ‘really’ going to have to start leaving my Target card at home and set a Target shopping budget.

But due to the great variety of natural products, and I hear there are more to come, you wont have a problem finding something that will fit into your budget. Of course, you will save a little money right from the start because there will be no shipping fees, but the prices range from the lowest $7.99 to the highest $58. Target’s exclusive SheaMoisture line, which consists of products for your face, body as well hair, are all priced at $9.99 each.

When I first saw the SheaMoisture line it looked and smelled familiar, with a little research I discovered it’s from the makers of Nubian Heritage. The creators are Liberian born, friends Richelieu Dennis and Nyema Tubman, who started off selling scented oils on the sidewalks in Harlem, New York. Today they have a 50,000 square foot manufacturing facility and business conglomerate which includes four retail stores. I love their Body Butter Soap, with Mango, Shea and Cocoa Butter Mango.

Be sure to check out your local Target, to scope out, try and re-stock your favorite natural lines.

- Crying from her futile attempts at combing through my hair.
- Crying from even the thought of the hot comb anywhere near my scalp…
- Crying from the tightness of the braids – I mean, they needed to last as long as possible, right?
- Crying.
- Crying.
- Crying.

She couldn’t take it anymore and eventually I got a Perm.

Needless to say, this brought great friction to the family – especially since I was forever reminded that I should have had hair down my back “by now” (Just like my cousins) – had my mother not given me a perm at such a young age.

- Is her hair falling out?
- Is it breaking off?

At that point those talking points were almost irrelevant because:
- There was no more crying.

During my Elementary school days, I would rock (4) ponytail braids, (1) ponytail in the back – or if my mother was adventurous – I would even have curls from the curling iron.

- Hum… is my hair getting shorter?

Every time I went to the salon to get a “trim” I would go home crying because I felt like what little length of hair I had was just chopped off… I just saw my hair getting shorter and shorter.
In my head… the pretty girls had the long hair…

- AND My hair was no where near being long.

I just felt this in my heart – despite how talented or smart I was… it didn’t matter. I was inferior because of my mane.
But just think about it – how many products are out there promising to be the “miracle” product that will guarantee your hair to grow? And you go out there and buy every single one of them – with the hopes that “This will be the one!”
Hilarious – Clearly all of that faith and energy should have been directed somewhere else.

Now what happened to me in Middle School…..is something that I wouldn’t even wish on my worst enemy.
((kids can be so cruel))

My mother and my hairdresser came up with this “solution” to my hair breakage problems…
Basically, THEY decided to cut damn near all of my hair off – not to go natural, but to prepare my hair for an alternative chemical process… “The Wave”.

Now – I wasn’t stupid…I used that “term” to make myself feel better about my situation.. I mean – that’s kind of what it said on the bottle – BUT Lord knows that it was just a glorified Jheri Curl.

((I think I cried damn near every day after school – just trying to wrap my brain around the ridicule, jokes, and cerebral torture))

It was horrible on so many levels.

- Boys put spitballs in my hair.
- They started to call me “Hairy” – Because NOW I had “Too Much” hair… (wth?)
- It was greasy – and always moist…. That did not help in gym class on the mats.
- I didn’t look like the other girls with straight hair…And at this point it wasn’t even about the length of hair – just was long as it wasn’t the “soul glow”…. So great – now even the girls with no hair whatsoever were able to pick on me.

I was just an easy target.

When I attended a predominately White school, I remember Chris, one of my classmates asking me if I could do my hair like Lauryn Hill. Not having cable, I didn’t know what he was talking about. But when I saw he was referring to L Boggie’s hair in the Killing Me Softly Video I was sold I needed to copy the style. You know, when she’s rocking a ‘fro with long braids in the front. Everyone wanted to be like the Fugees, especially Lauryn. Besides the fact that I had a chemical S-curl, my duplication of the natural hair style feel short of my Lauryn Hill expectations.

I enjoyed listening to Lauryn Hill on NPR. Lauryn’s impact was so great, that any song brings up nostalgia.
