I spend my weekend with my beautiful girlfriend Stacy in Hampton Roads. We spend our Saturday at the
AFR’AM Festival. African-American cultural festival held annually during Memorial Day weekend, and the Summer Arts Workshop for children and youth, which offers instruction in the performing arts. Celebrating more than 25 years of African-American culture and fine arts, the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association (SEVAA) is proud to continue its tradition of hosting the state’s premier African-American festival. The Southeastern Virginia Arts Association (SEVAA) inaugurated AFR’AM FEST on Memorial Day weekend, 1983. Today AFR’AM FEST has grown to become one of the largest African-American cultural celebrations on the East coast.
I am sorry to say I don’t have my usual pics because I broke my camera :o( I’m a little sad, but I wont let it stop me!! After fueling up on good eats we visited many of the vendors. Update: We did take a few shots with our camera phones :o)
We sat for a while at the Literary Cafe
New York Times Best Selling Author “God Don’t like Ugly”, Mary Monroe and Jonathan Queen author of “Don’t Blame Me: The Convict Chronicles” were part of the panel on Black books. The panel discussed various topics of book sensorship, to self publishing your book.
Stacy and I were both rocking our Kinnks Tee—shout out to the girls that stopped us asking for one!! Of course I had a few on me, and granted their wish!
We spent a majority of our time in front of the stage. Letoya Luckett and Salt-N-Pepper performed. In between acts, the DJs played all the classics that get you out of your seat. There were these two little girls, they looks like sisters around 7 and 9 years of age. When the DJ played thriller, the girls performed the entire routine step by step. Michael Jackson lives on!!
There was also this guy rocking a high top fade. He had to be like 15…maybe the style is coming back?

I ran into the creator of Cleverspeaks.com. I was very impressed with her mission to highlight positive people and things within our community. She featured a article, How Much Influence Does the Media Have Over You? with the following video.
Stacy mentioned it was nice seeing all the Black families together. I realized sometimes the media will make you feel we are all from broken homes with single mothers. Being involved in festivals like AFR’Am brings you back to reality. When Black people get together, we have a good uplifting time. Our Black American culture is strong!
