Today at work (my 9-5), I was greeted by a prospective client. He stood about 5’6 dressed in a formal black suite with a white shirt. I later learned he was a young preacher with a small church of fifty or so. I was greeted by his warm eyes framed by glasses. Then after our salutations, he yelled, what seemed to be at the top of his lungs, I LOVE YOUR LOCS. It was loud enough for my entire office to hear.
Embarrassed, I said thank you and quickly changed the subject. Why was I embarrassed you ask? Because I have twist!! I even took the time to ensure they were neat and defined. I have nothing against locs, I love locs, but I do not have them. This guy was nice as nice can be…! But why do we as a people not understand our own hair? I can’t even say I am surprised, because it happens to me all the time. I am just astonished at our ignorance of ourselves. I guess I have more teaching and outreach to do!
So for more sadness… who saw Tyra? The Good Hair Episode. :Sigh: Why do we hate ourselves so? After only seeing the preview…
My List of No-Nos covered on the Tyra Show 5.12.09
1. Perming a child’s hair at three years of age – this is seriously child abuse!
2. Having a biracial child for hair texture, not love.
3. Comparing natural hair to chimpanzee hair
4. Claiming you have a white girl hair flow, and that makes you better than other people
5. Tyra wearing cornrows because she is talking about natural hair
I would love to hear your comments on this episode.
Look in the mirror, and say I LOVE ME! (includin you Tyra!)

I didn’t watch the show. But I get the “I love your locs” comment all the time. Then I follow up with an explanation saying that they weren’t locs but twists. It’s tiring.
- No problem Eby!
- O.A.E—Okay, its just not me!
I didn’t watch the show because I didn’t want to spend my day angry. I knew in some way BW would be degraded and I’m sick and tried of these type of shows. If we (BW) are not going to be celebrated then I am not watching it.
Feel you on the loc-twists thing. I did mini twists last month and a lotta people thought I had locs or that I was starting them.
I really like them and may loc in the future but not anytime soon.
I saw the show on utube. It is a shame in 2009 that we have that mentality for our natural hair! I get more flack about my hair from African descended folks than from Caucaisans!! (Used to, but now, folks dont bother me anymore.) I have my hair chemical free for 15 years, and it is so much healthier. It is a shame when we have children with Caucaisans so we dont have to deal with hair issues, or chemically alter a 2 year old child hair. We must learn to love ourselves and deal with what we have. There are more natual products for kinky, nappy hair (yeah I said nappy, and happy to be too) than when I first went natural. We need to get a grip and practice self love! We need to turn off the t.v. and those magazines that says that we arent beautiful. I dont watch tv, so I have eliminated that problem!
