India Arie and John Legend

As mentioned on my previous post I saw India Arie and John Legend.  It was a fabulous show!!

All Alone
My husband, my date for the concert just started a new job in which he could not get out early.  Determined to see India I drove an hour to Charlottesville on my own.  Once she came on, I danced and boogied all alone to her familiar songs.

First Time I Heard India
In my hometown of New Haven, Connecticut I went into a small independent music store, Cutlers looking for the new Alicia Keys CD.  After asking the Asian clerk for help he said, “No you don’t want to get Alicia Keys.  Get this new artist India Arie.  You will not be disappointed.”  From the time I heard “Brown Skin” and “Ready for Love” I was hooked.

Why I love India
I am a huge fan of India Arie because she seems so determined to be herself, not what she SHOULD be.  It seems she is not afraid to step outside the box.  Hence the song “Video,” or “I am not my hair” and maybe soon to be released “Roller Coaster”.  The theme continued with her back up singers not in uniform or petite, one rocked a natural, and the other with micro braids.

Of course she performed, “I am not my hair”.  She unwrapped her head wrap to reveal long hair down to her back, maybe micro braids.  To end the song she flung off the wig to show a very lo hair cut.  She started to brush her hair explaining how comfortable she is with the short doo.

John Legend
I love John Legend, I can listen to his CDs over and over again.  He entered the pavilion through the audience and the crowd was pumped!!
India & JohnHe sounded just like his albums and had amazing visuals, some from his music videos.  His backup singers were three sexy ladies.  As I watched them gyrate and sing their hearts out I imagined myself in their skin tight leggings and sequence tops.  Nah, I don’t think I can pull it off…lol!

One lady was picked to go on stage with John Legend.  He serenaded her and gave her a rose.  She was soo happy.  She walked up and down the aisles showing everyone her rose.  I kept seeing people approach her with hugs telling her congratulations.  At one point, she tapped me on the shoulder to show me her rose.  She definitely milked her fifteen minutes of fame into an hour.

India
In the middle of John Legend’s act, India Arie joined him for a song.  My hubby finally got to the show about an hour and half later.  After seeing India Arie on stage with John Legend, a not so big India Arie fan was like wow, she has legs for days.  I felt proud that he could see her sex appeal even tho she is not half naked gyrating on the stage.

A Great Part of the concert of course was seeing lots of naturals.  I meet one young lady Evonne, natural for two years.  She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia but there is no natural salons she knows of.  Her mom braided her hair into an elegant ‘fro hawk.  It was great meeting you Evonne!

Hey, I’m so jealous.

I meant to mapquest the drive from Winston to Charlottesville and completely forgot so I’ve got the frown face.

I did however get to see Erykay Badu last year in Greensboro and boy was she awesome.

Great post!  Love the story about the Asian clerk giving you the scoop (LOL).  I admire Ms. Arie for the same reason you do—she’s not afraid to be herself.  We could use more of that, not only in our community but throughout the world . . .

I love india - like I said I was upset I missed her coming to the DC area when I was out of town, but I will see here next time. - I’m sort of a india.arie stalker - my friend and I have been to almost every concert when she comes and we’ve waited outside after the concert to meet her - got her autograph on our ticket stubs, t-shirts and everything :o)
