Inspiration from Traci Simpson of Satin Blends

image
Traci Simpson, is the creative force behind Satin Blends. Satin Blends consists of all natural products for the entire family. You will find everything you need from head to toe, including, hair and scalp treatments, body butters, bath salts, foot scrubs and more. Satin Blends products, which can also be customized, are made with essential oils, organic carrier oils and natural preservatives.

Traci’s Hair Story…
I started my natural hair journey in March 2006.  The decision to no longer perm my hair came along with me making the transition into a vegetarian/holistic lifestyle.  It was a rough hair journey.  As my hair was going through the detox stage I battled with “cant do anything with my hair” syndrome.

My hair had an interesting look…I had inches and inches of new growth with straight permed ends.  My natural hair transition was so challenging for me that I purchased a perm because of that “cant do anything with my hair” stage.  I am soooo thankful that I held strong and didn’t perm my hair.  Being Natural is who I am! I had to embrace my hair in order to love it.  Although my hair has different textures - I still love being natural.  I found my purpose in my naturalness.

As a result of changing my lifestyle, I stumbled across my purpose.  I had no idea what God had in store for me.  Being vegetarian/holistic/natural, I had to change the products that I used on my skin and my hair.  I attended the Natural Hair Expo in 2009 in which I purchased raw shea butter for the first time.

I’m not sure where the idea came from but I decided to put the shea butter, olive oil, vitamin E and Lavender in the blender (my first recipe).  I let a coworker try my concoction in which she loved it and wanted to purchase a jar.  This was the birth of Satin Blends.

Satin Blends products are all natural, organic and Vegan.  All Satin Blends product are handmade with Passion & Love.  Our products are specially blended with raw unrefined shea butter, organic essential oils. organic carrier oils (such as Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, etc) and natural preservatives.

Traci’s thoughts on the emergence of larger companies adding natural products to their product lines…

I think the larger companies jump on the bandwagon of what’s the latest “happenings”.  Being natural is becoming the way of the world.  Because natural is becoming the way of the world, the big companies add a little shea butter or aloe in their products and dub them as natural.  The large companies will advertise the product as natural, but those products also have artificial and harsh preservatives that are not good for skin or hair.

Unfortunately, most consumers don’t read or understand the product labels.  One of the issues that I think may affect the smaller home based company is pricing.  The consumers may feel the smaller home based business prices are more expensive than the larger companies pricing.

When using raw organic materials such as unrefined shea butter and organic oils (essential and carrier) the smaller company will price their products accordingly in which the consumer may think it’s too expensive.  This could be a reason why a smaller home based business may be pushed out of business.

In my opinion, the smaller home based companies such as mine have the passion for the product as well as the passion for the consumers.  As the smaller home based business grow their customer base (dedicated consumers) they have the potential of remaining in the black hair care industry.  I don’t feel the larger companies have passion for the natural product - again this is my opinion.

Traci’s advice to those who want to their own business…

My advice for someone looking to start their own business is to let your vision be your guide.  Have a vision for what you want your business to become and work toward that goal.
