Is Straight Hair More Patriotic?
I know how I feel…but I often wonder how White women feel about our hair. Huffington Post, Gioia Diliberto: First Hair gave me a little glimpse. While Huffington Post is very forward thinking, I feel the author agrees with me 100%. Why can’t Michelle rock her natural hair?

It seems the biggest enemies of Natural Hair are
* African-Americans
* Older African-Americans
* And Blacks
A little redundant? Michelle Obama has ignored the First Lady memos provided by Laura Bush and Hilary Clinton. She is not the next Jackie Kennedy, but the next Michelle Obama. This comparison alone is an amazing accomplishment, and I applaud her. She and her husband are loved across color lines.
I don’t know if she is safely across the ‘loved by all’ line, but I am confident it will happen. What I find disheartening is that given a pass, or the approval ratings, the First Lady will never make the choice to be natural. This can probably be said for other Black women like Oprah and Condoleezza Rice.
Many will say that going Natural is career suicide. People have been fired for wearing natural hair, or it appears “Militant” – similar to the New Yorker’s afro image of Michelle Obama last July.
Can you imagine having naturally straight or blonde hair, and being told- if you wear it you may appear militant… and people will be intimidated? So, go get your hair fixed every 4-6 weeks to keep your job.
Just ludicrous.
As mentioned before in my previous blog, Michelle Obama Goes Natural, I believe she is choosing her battles. To her credit, she has helped black aesthetics by just being a positive, educated, and a hip First Lady. Hopefully, one day in the soon future—we can address loving our natural hair along with our skin color! As Blacks, if we have NOT internalized the white standard of beauty, why are we so disgusted with naps?
To be in a high ranking position does one have to have straight hair? Does that mean one can actually assimilate? Fact: no matter how much one tries… their ethnicity will remain the same.
Back to my theory of natural hair enemies, why do most students from HBCs (Historic Black Colleges) tend to have perms verses those that go to mostly White Universities?
What are “elite” African-Americans being taught, or teaching their children about their natural hair?
