Look Who’s Selling Natural Hair Products

By now, I’m sure that most natural hair wearers, who are also Target fans, have heard the news via hair blogs, Facebook, Twitter etc… that Target stores are selling natural hair products! And these products are not only brands exclusive to Target like the Youtube-famed SheaMoisture line. Target’s shelves and online stores are carrying, Miss Jessie’s, The Jane Carter Solution, CURLS, Taliah Waajid’s, and the newest edition Kinky-Curly, Black Earth Products. And most of these lines can’t even be found at your local beauty supply store.

imageAccording to the March 31, 2010 press release, “Target has expanded its hair care assortment to include African American salon products never before offered at mass… This expansion further delivers on the retailer’s Expect More. Pay Less™ brand promise while providing guests with convenient access to the brands they know and trust.” No longer do we, natural hair wearers, have to order online at different sites for these products - we can get them all at one place - our neighborhood Target.

For those like me this news is bitter sweet because I Love Target
and I can barely make it out of the store, even though my plan may have been to just pick up a Birthday or Graduation card and some gum, without spending more than $50 (and I’m being a tad bit modest with the $50 just in case my mother or husband are reading - lol). Anyway, being the product junkie that I am, I am ‘really’ going to have to start leaving my Target card at home and set a Target shopping budget.

But due to the great variety of natural products, and I hear there are more to come, you wont have a problem finding something that will fit into your budget. Of course, you will save a little money right from the start because there will be no shipping fees, but the prices range from the lowest $7.99 to the highest $58. Target’s exclusive SheaMoisture line, which consists of products for your face, body as well hair, are all priced at $9.99 each.

When I first saw the SheaMoisture line it looked and smelled familiar, with a little research I discovered it’s from the makers of Nubian Heritage. The creators are Liberian born, friends Richelieu Dennis and Nyema Tubman, who started off selling scented oils on the sidewalks in Harlem, New York. Today they have a 50,000 square foot manufacturing facility and business conglomerate which includes four retail stores. I love their Body Butter Soap, with Mango, Shea and Cocoa Butter Mango.

Be sure to check out your local Target, to scope out, try and re-stock your favorite natural lines.

GREAT article. I had no idea the Shea/moisture brand was created by Nubian Heritage. Nor did I know they had a manufacture facility and four retail stores.
