I previously mentioned that I had the honor of attending Low Country’s Beauty Expo. Since 2006 the event host, Darryl and his associates of Lowcountry Exposure, have hosted the Fashion and Beauty Seminar in Charleston SC. The Seminar focused on the Fashion and Beauty Industry through classroom lectures, CEU classes, fashion show and product demonstration. In October 2009, they added a Natural Beauty Seminar, with focus on the Natural Hair and its growing choice by Women for its styles.
My voyage to the show in Charleston started via Amtrak. I was pleasantly surprised by the scenic views Amtrak provided from Rocky Mount, Virginia to Charleston, South Carolina! This New Englander, is slowly becoming a southern girl! I arrived Friday night and hung out with Ansylla of MyHairtage and designer, She She of She She NY! (pictured)
Darryl and Ms. She She were SOO generous, and welcoming!!
The next morning we had the opportunity to meet several vendors, people and see great performances.
Georgia based Braids of Natural Art had a portion of the show with Natural kids. Oh they did a fantastic job with fabulous the kiddies hair.
Some of my favorites were African Dance and the kids fashion show.

That afternoon I and other naturalist discussed Cindy Hurst’s documentary A Natural Woman.
The documentary begged for people to to ask themselves, WHY do you choose not to wear your natural hair? The more thought you give, the more healing you see we need as a community.
During the panel discussion we spoke about
Negritude
“My hair is political”
Blacks are the only ones who can have an afro
Secret bond naturals share
Nappy Hair is ugly
Straight hair is meant to look good, not necessarily White
Natural Hair fad verses lifestyle
Socialization starts at infancy
Even if we could go natural, would we?
Hair is your glory
Media representation of our hair
Positive reinforcement needed for our youth
Sensuality verses natural hair (sexuality is typically associated with long hair)
Self definition in relation to hair
The need to tame our children’s hair
After going natural you say things like…
I like Who I am
Wish I was brave enough to go natural…
I love myself enough to be who god wanted me to be
Deeper than hair
Advice for those not yet natural…
If a man doesn’t doesn’t like you cause your hair – he doesn’t understand that it grows out of your head
Fake it until you make it
Natural Hair vulnerability
Research
To sum it up, I am sooo glad I ventured the seven-hours each way to attend the show! I meet great people, and had a fabulous time!! For more information visit Lowcountry Exposure on facebook or their official website.
