Movie: Avatar
I have not seen the movie, but its description sounds familiar. Humans go to the planet of Pandora to extract a precious mineral. To extract this precious mineral, the indigenous people Na’vi are asked to leave peacefully. Because the Na’vi feel the land is sacred, they refuse to leave. Greed, power and money start serious conflicts between the two. There is one line in the trailer when one of their humans say something about the Na’vi only having bows and arrows while the humans have machine guns. The graphics seem amazing. If you are into sci-fi this seems like a movie-watchers dream. While watching the trailer I ignored all the amazing graphics. Instead I was focusing on the various hairstyles of the Na’vi including braids and locs.
Movie: Predator
Then I remember when I first saw Predator. While I should have been afraid and involved in the story line, I kept saying to myself, are those locs? Okay maybe tentacles?

Do you think African-American hair can seem alien-like to Western society??

Natural hair on African-American people as a whole is a confusing thing for many people (for some reason) because it isn’t what “they are used to”. Our hair, in a way, reflects our physical and spiritual ability to grow, change, and adapt in a way other hair textures cannot. It can take on different shapes and looks, all stemming from a strong base, and no other hair texture in the world has the ability to change with such chameleon-like form. So does it seem alien-like?
Naturally.
definitely….I can’t count the number of times i’ve seen movies with “aliens” and the hair looks like locs….just TODAY I was looking at an ad for a movie that came out a while ago, couple years ago, can’t remember the name but the aliens had locs and I thought it was odd.

Ummm… YES! They want to touch, ask if/how often we wash. Locs are even more confusing to some.
