In my pre-teen years I had a binder in which I would collect my favorite magazine clippings. The prized page were filled with my favorite Word Up! interviews and photos. Dru Hill was always number one. Destiny’s Child was a frequent feature. I was a fan of their first CD. I remember watching many of the videos on BET. By the time the second album, Writing On the Wall debuted…Beyonce was everywhere! Beyonce-madness was to the point where people started to despise her. (Some may say jealous of her.) When Destiny’s Child first started it was a little r&b group, that a select group knew about and loved. But then they went POP, and everyone jumped on the DC/Beyonce train. In my head I’m thinking, DUDE…I’ve been following them for years! My sentiment on natural hair is similar.
Natural hair was for a select group of people. Loved and embraced by hair connoisseurs, but unnoticed by many. Now, POP, natural hair is on everyone’s radar! The general public has an opinion about whats on MY head. The View, Chris Rock and even club promoters.
I just read the article Natural hair doesn’t make you ‘Blacker’ and it annoyed me. Ugh, another opinion.
After taking a deep breath, I remembered my Letter to Relaxed Sistas. But, then there are the natural hair instigators, or Jerks who parade around condemning creamy crack.
I know its selfish, but sometimes, I just want natural hair to quiet down a bit. I want to yell, It ain’t new people!
Less than 40 years ago the ‘fro of Angela Davis symbolized Revolution. Now, a fro is affectionately displayed on Sesame Street.
Do you think that natural hair’s growing POPularity is a good thing?
Long over due.
I can’t think of any other group in the world who have been ridiculed about their natural hair texture. So the way I look at it; there are different strokes for different folks.
For many natural hair needs to quiet down because they don’t have issues with their hair.
For other some need the noise so they know they can wear their hair in its natural state and there is no longer a reason to be ashamed.
Life is full of possibilities. I say we all need to take from life what works for us personally and not try to make things the same for all.
What if everyone were “quiet”? what type of world would this be.
Just do you. I don’t worry about the noise or the rest.

I agree with your blog comments. One of my clients and I just had this discussion. I think there will always be a natural hair/loc community as there always has been. Since there are different motives for wearing natural hair, there are some who will not remain natural. I do tire of the “bickering” though. Some with one type of loc speak negatively of a different type of loc. Some with natural hair make harsh comments about those with relaxers and/or extensions (and vice versa). Indeed, we all have our opinions, but perhaps we shouldn’t put another down for having an opinion that differs from ours.
