Taming the Beast – How to be a Natural Hair Ambassador Without Coming Off Like a Jerk

imageBy Terez Howard

So, you’re natural now, and you want every other black girl to be natural like you?

It’s not an uncommon reaction when you discover the wonders of your curls and coils.  Your natural hair can do things that your permed hair could never have done.  The online community of naturals spurs you to take your message of natural hair care to the streets.

But if you aren’t careful, your helpful mission could turn into a beastly re-run, the kind that no one wants to revisit.  If every other word out of your mouth gets glares and constant backlash, you might want to consider refining your approach.

Here’s how you can retain your status as a natural hair ambassador without coming off like a jerk:

Wait for questions to come to you.  If someone wants to know about your natural hair care routine, tell them what you do to achieve flawless twist-outs.  When someone wants to know why their chemically-treated hair is experiencing breakage while your natural head is flourishing, gently discuss possible problems and solutions, such as remedies for damaged hair.

Be sure to keep your responses brief.  Just because I could talk about natural hair for 20 minutes straight doesn’t mean that a person wants to listen to me for that long.  Short and sweet.  That will be most effective.

Start a blog or journal.
Get all your pent-up information out in a blog.  Keep a journal online or on paper of your natural hair happenings.  Record growth, product reviews and advice that has worked for you.

A blog can be shared with the world of naturals.  Your story can inspire transitioners, naturals and maybe even those ladies you’ve been trying to convince to go natural.

Get involved with naturals online.  There are plenty of naturals and wanna-be’s actively searching for information on what to do with their hair.  Hit online forums, like Naturally Curly, Nappturality or Curly Nikki, and get to helping ladies that actually want to hear from you.  Also, get the help you need.

The best way to be a natural hair ambassador
Let your hair speak for itself.  Take care of your natural hair, and curious spectators will take note of your healthy mane.  They might ask questions.  However, they might offer a simple compliment.  Resist the urge to school them on natural hair basics when all they wanted to do was compliment you. Say, “thank you,” and move on.

People won’t want earplugs when they see you coming.  Tame the beast.  Be a valuable resource to people that want it.
