The View Tackles Natural Hair

The hype continues.  Thanks Candi for letting me know that even ABC’s day time talk-show “The View” tackled the issue of Natural Hair thanks to Tyra’s “unveiling” of her not so natural hair.  If you’d didn’t catch the episode, check out the video.  They begin the hair discussion around 12:55.

The ladies brought up a couple of issues that made me smile ear to ear.  OMGosh, I wanted to add, have you ever been to kinnks.com??? :-D

A Few points mentioned I happened to jot down… * Whoopi Goldberg: Its not the issue of the weave so much as the texture.  Why are weaves always long and flowing?
To answer her questions the ladies suggested versatility of styling.
Sherri Shepherd admitted the obvious, growing up she idealized the Brady Bunch, and wanted hair like them!  She explained she also likes flipping her hair.
Back in the day before Whoppi, Joy Behar was my favorite member of The View.  Joy said its all about having the RIGHT hair, and Afro-hair is not it.  She continues that Michelle Obama should go NATURAL.  Sheri adds, Michelle Obama is natural…oh you mean natural as in afro-textured hair. Duh

Sherri Shepherd made me so angry by saying that people with afro-textured hair do not get hired for jobs.
THIS IS THE BIGGEST NATURAL HAIR MYTH EVER.
Maybe a few years ago, but if you are qualified and have a well maintained hair style whether it be locs or a ‘fro, they are going to snatch you up!! Let me say this, there are some jobs that you will not get hired because you’re Black, Gay, Short, Fat, Natural, whatever…but is that the job you really want?! Do you really want people that judge your hair as part of your qualifications to employ you?  Should you constantly change yourself to fit in with the Joneses?  Where does it stop to make a certain type of employer happy? Can Black people really assimilate? Ugh! Don’t get me started yal

Whoppi pointed out that she has been natural for 30+ years the psyche has not shifted. Again she asked, WHY don’t more Black women get Afro-textured weaves.

THANKS WHOPPI FOR REPRESENTIN’ FOR US NATURALS!!

The Natural Hair Definition * If you’re relaxed, “natural hair” means weave-less.  If you’re NATURAL, natural hair means afro-textured, chemical free (hair color is debatable) Black women don’t like to admit it, but they consider “NATURAL” hair as relaxed even tho they have to apply the creamy crack every couple of weeks to maintain it.  Is this really natural?...hmmm

BTW—I looked up Natural in my Webster dictionary and it states:

”...by birth, according to nature”

If Whoppi can be Natural, than any one can!  (Don’t worry I will prepare a blog about the “Mammy” asexual, dark skin, nappy hair wearing stereotype, and what the means too).

Thanks for reading my little rant! Whew, I feel better. Peace, Love and Shea Butter!! Lady Kinnks’ Article also seen on The Coil Review

Natural means no chemicals applied to the hair to maintain it. A chemical relaxer is NOT natural. Sherri, Sherri…mmm mmm mmm! I pity her. Low self-esteem is in the toilet to wish for something that will never be hers….not naturally. Joy pissed me off when she made that comment about having the right hair. Afro hair is NOT it. Whoppi is the one to set them on the right path. I love our First Lady Michelle Obama. I saw a big poster in the local beauty supply advertising a wig called the First Lady. I was too through. I had one White woman ask me why my hair wasn’t like most Black women. I have locs, and I knew exactly what she meant. I explained to her that I no longer wear a weave, or relax my hair with chemicals to make non ethnic people comfortable with my hair texture. I don’t give damn what people think about my hair. I’ve been asked if I was a lesbian. Some well meaning people actually ask to touch my hair because they’re curious. I’m about to become the angry militant over this….lol! Hair is still political, isn’t it?

Ms. Stacey, you made good points.  I liked Joy’s point about the RIGHT hair because its so true…its like everyone is conditioned to have long straight hair…blonde if applicable.  If we had the RIGHT hair, then more people including Whites and Asians would be perming their hair. Ugh, being the only natural to constantly explain your hair and have people touch it can be exhausting.  But your patience won’t go unnoticed.  More people will hopefully join the trend.

Good day,

If your hair is permed and you don’t wear a weave then you can say “all this is my hair”. But your permed hair is not your ‘natural’ hair because your natural hair has been chemically altered.  If your hair is naturally black you can say this is my natural hair colour, but if it is dyed. Then your hair is coloured.

I don’t think the issue is too complicated.  Just as what is written in the dictionary natural is the state that you were born in.

Karen you’re right…Tyra should have hyped up her show saying im gonna show ALL MY HAIR, not natural :o)  I guess everyone wants to say their NATURAL even tho they shouldn’t.

sherri, sherri, sherri. what goes through her head sometimes?

Posted by clarahallow121  on  09/25  at  10:06 AM

Ok, but if we are going to discuss natural and people being hard on those that feel that permed hair is natural, then we should discuss locs.  Really are they natural???  that is not the way your hair grows out of your head.  It is not chemically treated, I agree but it is not its natural states.  At least that is my opinion.  People should be entitled to wear their hair the way they want.  However, if the way we where our hair is because of our insecurities we should reevaluate those ideas.  However, we should not berate people for their hair choices.  I do feel that people can be discriminated against because of their hair but people can be discriminated because of the way they smell.  Learn to love ourselves is the key and you don’t have to do that by wearing your hair natural.

@Come on People ... Hmmm, interesting point about locs.  I never looked at it that way.  One can def agree with you!  I have to say I always considered locs natural because it is a type of style.  Just because you comb your hair doesn’t mean its not natural.  But applying a chemical that harms your scalp—burns, smells, etc can be harmful unlike natural styles like locs or afros.  I agree, people are entitled to wear their hair the way they want.  if you wear your hair straight, good for you!! the problem starts with people that are ashamed of their hair in its natural curl like I was.

I so enjoy staying in the loop with everyones’ opinion about “Hair” and here comes Chris Rock, placing more light on the subject, if you want to call it that. Honestly, I think the many ways in which our people chose to rock their hair is fabulous. From just being a lady, all I would like to see is women keeping their “hair” maintained.” If its a perm, (yes it will burn if not processed correctly) then keep the roots in tact and the ends clipped. If it’s natural, (you are not exempt either), represent (yourself) well! In listening to some people’s take on the hair matter, I hope that “we” are not confusing our hair with our black pride. Coming from a sister who faithfully sports a relaxer, I see some awesome black women who can rock natural or a relaxer. Whatever is your claim to fame, do it correctly and keep it looking tight.
