As a child, braids were the norm. Little Black girls had cornrows. My mom didn’t like beads. Instead she laced my hair with colorful yarn (short lived style of the 80s).
Naturally.Elemental brought to my attention a story of a young girl. A young girl who believes she was attacked because of her braids. This is almost as ludicrous as the teacher who cut off a student’s braid. I am sure we don’t know the entire story, but the concept of being attached because of a hair style is an interesting one. Ms. Vanessa,
I agree that these stories are disheartening. Hair is sacred! That is why I have dedicated a website to it :o) I have been attached verbally because of my hair, and know that emotions can escalate to violence. In my opinion, the attacker is jealous of the young girl, therefore attacked her because of the beauty of her hair. The two situations are ludicrous, we as a society should respect everyone’s personal space, including braids!
Thank you for your comments!
I find this video disheartening, to actually see this type of attack involving young precious children. No matter the attack all children are precious, children learn by example and oftentimes they display what they have learned. This pattern continues to follow. I was viciously attacked like this years ago and this was 15 years back. It continues to follow us and I can only pray to God for deliverance for our people!
I straighten my daughter’s hair, braid it twist it I am pretty versatile, to enable appreciation for what God has given her! We don’t only have to love the children that we had, we also have to love those that are not ours as well!
Stay blessed
I always tell my girls that bullies are bullied at home. I teach them to have compassion for these people because they come from a home that should be a place of safety but are usually a place of abuse and neglect. This is the only way I can see how to deal with animal like behavior which fighting someone over a hairstyle is.
We have allowed the ‘human’ to disappear out of humanity. this had to be traumatic for this young lady and her mother and the parents of the initiator of the fight should face some kind of consequence also; like maybe attending parenting classes. Driving violators have to attend driving classes. We as a society must do something.
I cannot believe a co-called adult was so vindictive to a 7 yr old child/baby!!! However, I am less surprised about the 11 yr old young ladies.
I am 25 and have seen teen girls fight. It is not pretty. I never had to fight myself but I fear for the young girls of today. It seems no one bothers to exert self control anymore. If someone makes you made you should hit them seems to be the common response. It makes me weary of bringing a child into today’s world. I am sorry this young lady can’t enjoy and embrace what God graced her with without being hated for it, especially by her fellow “sisters.”
Some time before, I did need to buy a good house for my corporation but I didn’t earn enough cash and could not order something. Thank goodness my comrade proposed to take the mortgage loans at reliable bank. Thus, I acted that and used to be happy with my short term loan.

First off, this is a BLACK ON BLACK crime; there is nothing “ludicrous” about it. Children can be just as violent and horrifying as adults. The video is obscene, violent and disgusting. As for that teacher, her attack on the student was seemingly spurred by racial hostility. One of your writers wrote this: “The truth is, within our American culture hair is sacred.” In regards to what went down on that video, life, respect, and learning about one’s culture are more sacred than hair, even though hair has a lot to do with what happened here.
